The Unofficial
I-26 Construction
Madison County
North Carolina

A good view of Rock Cut #7 and Waste Area #1 on this project. The waste area could easily hold all the material left over from construction of this project, but for the contractor's convenience we provided two waste sites. The benching excavation is clearly shown here as well. The historic site had to be totally avoided by the highway construction. This was only partially successful; a large silt basin was located in this area but will be removed at a later date. The fill slope behind the historic site is nearly finished. There are three temporary slope drains on it, shown as thin black lines running down the slope. Little Laurel Creek runs between the construction limits and US 23. Photo taken in May 1999 by the Photogrammetry Unit.
