This is the top of the rock cut slope located just to the west of the Buckner Gap excavation. This cut will eventually be over 300' deep, with about 200' of it within solid rock. Each level of rock removal (called a "lift") is about 15' high, and there were three lifts completed in this picture. The slope is steeper than the usual soil slope to reduce the excavation volume and the overall right of way width. The rock bolt is installed on the edge of the cut to provide more stability to a potentially loose section of the rock. A fissure or joint can be seen just above the bolt. Photo taken in February 1999.
