Rock slopes on the A-10 projects are all built about the same way. The rock ends up resembling a rainbow at the top, which will usually be the deepest section of the cut. A 20' wide bench at the intersection of the rock and soil cuts goes on top of the rock slope to catch any material that slides or rolls off the soil above the rock. The rock is removed in layers or "lifts", with each lift being about 15' high. There are three lifts removed so far at this location; the presplitting drill holes can still be seen in the rock. The dark streaks are from water running down the rock from melting ice. Photo taken in February 1999.
