During the winter months, keeping the erosion control measures in operation is vital. Part of this work involves keeping mulch on the exposed soil not being worked on at that particular time. Reaching the whole slope requires either a lot of men running up and down the slope spreading mulch, or a device like this. Bales of straw, carried on the wagon behind the thrower, are fed into the machine. The straw is shredded and fired out of the projecting end by compressed air out and over the slope. A good layer of mulch can be quickly spread over an entire slope, reducing the time nothing is covering the exposed soil from rainfall. Photo taken in February 1999.
