The Unofficial
I-26 Construction
Madison County
North Carolina

This is the left hand rock slope in Area #1, the first major cut on the project. The rock slope itself is cut to a 1:1 ratio and is about 100' high, with an overall cut height of around 200'. The bench at the top of the rock slope is 30' wide and the soil slope is on a 1.5:1 ratio. A rock fence and planter will be constructed between the rock slope and the through lanes to protect motorists from falling rock. The dark stripes in the cut are different types of rock embedded within the more common gneiss and quartz. This is the first major cut to be completed on either project. Photo taken in May 1999.
