The canvas covered area is the location of a soil nail wall. These walls are used to stabilize the slide prone earth and are partially buried once they are completed. A wire mesh is pinned to the soil with long tieback rods, and then concrete is sprayed onto the mesh to create the wall. The retaining wall at the top is a standard pile and panel wall. These walls are placed uphill of the Laurel Creek bridge columns to make sure no landslide will threaten these piers. Photo taken in May 1999.
