Keeping the silt and eroded material from leaving the project site is extremely important on such a huge construction job. Erosion control measures have to be multi-layered and cover every possible way silt can escape to natural streams. This photo shows one of those measures taken to keep silt on the construction site. The drainage box, located in the ditch of the interstate, is surrounded by erosion control stone and a silt fence. The fence helps to support the stone, which filters out any soil washed into it by rains. The silt fence also collects any fines that are not stopped by the stone. Each completed box is treated this way. Photo taken in July 1999.
