The Unofficial
I-26 Construction
Madison County
North Carolina

I noticed I had not provided a typical section of the I-26 construction on the website, so I drew one up. This shows all the various issues that had to be taken into consideration on this project during construction. Before the embankments can be built, the colluvium must be removed (called undercut here), the benches excavated, and the undercut replaced with rock. The big rock cuts have a wider ditch between them and the travel lanes, as well as a rock fence and concrete barrier. The rock cuts also have a 30' bench on top of them before the flatter soil cut begins. This design is used for most of A-10C and all of A-10D.
