This aerial photo was taken in 1999 by Gilbert Southern. This is one of the many large silt basins built to prevent soil from reaching the live streams around the project. Water from the construction site runs into one of the chambers of this pond, and gradually flows through pipes into the second chamber, where it then passes through rock screens before entering Laurel Creek above the pond in the photo. A rock berm and silt fence are also visible in this photo between the pond and Laurel Creek (within the line of trees.) Due to the diligence of the contractor and NCDOT construction personnel in keeping silt on the project, Laurel Creek has shown very little impact despite being in close proximity to this huge project.
