In order to get the rock to break on a nice, smooth plane, presplit holes are drilled where the break is required. This is a closeup photo of the presplit hole liners (the white tubes at the base of the slope) and the resulting rock face after a successful presplit operation. The cones are present to keep vehicles from getting too close to the area and possibly running over something essential. Photo taken in June 2000.
