Just north of the Laurel Creek bridge is the largest cut on either project. It is not a full cut, however; the right side of the construction is actually a high fill. Little Laurel Creek was so close to the project that the embankment would have fallen into the stream unless a rock buttress was built to keep the road out of it. This is what is being built here. The buttress will be over 200' high and covered with earth to hide the rocks and allow vegetation to quickly grow on it. The vehicles in the photo are spreading out the rock and placing soil on the slope; eventually, the buttress will reach the elevation where the photo was taken. Photo taken in June 2000.
