Looking south through the cut at Area #2, at the rock fence I-beams along the side of the interstate. These I-beams will support a Brugg rock fence designed to stop most moderate sized rocks that may fall off the slope above. The wire mesh isn't rigidly attached to the I-beams but is secured by cables with some give to them, allowing the mesh to stretch somewhat when a rock hits it. To protect motorists from hitting these unyielding steel beams, a concrete planter and barrier will be installed in front of the fence. Photo taken in October 2000 by Scott Hidden, of NCDOT's Soil Unit.
