The Unofficial
I-26 Construction
Madison County
North Carolina

At this location, just to the south of Buckner Gap, you can see several interesting operations. The machine on the rock ledge above the other construction vehicles is drilling holes to control the amount of rock blasted off with the next explosion. The dark stain below the drill machine is water running out of the drill holes used to cool the bit. Once the drill completes a line of holes, explosives will be poured into them and fuses will be set into them. The explosion will create a crack along the holes, which will limit how much material is released at one time. The rock blasted off will then be gathered by loaders and moved to fill locations further south on the project. The lower construction vehicles in the picture are maintaining a haul road up to the blast site.
