One of the big 96" structural plate girders being positioned for intallation at the Laurel Creek Bridge. This girder weighs around 33 tons and is about 100' long. The numerous studs sticking up off the top of it are to provide a good solid connection between the beam and the concrete deck that will be poured on top of it once the others are all installed. Area #6 can be seen in the background. Photo taken in October 2000 by Scott Hidden, of NCDOT's Soil Unit.
