A hydraulic rock drill being used to place rock bolts into the east face of the cut at Buckner Gap. The very top of the cut is full of fractured rock, and a rock nail wall was designed to stabilize the slope. The machine will drill holes into the rock, a metal rod will be grouted into the hole, and a strong wire mesh will be fastened to the metal rods. After that is done, concrete will be sprayed over the mesh to solidify the whole structure. Photo taken in October 2000 by Scott Hidden, of NCDOT's Soil Unit.
