A closeup view of the splice plates used to fasten the big 96" beams together. Each of the joints have these plates on them, and must be bolted together carefully in midair, sometimes over 200' above the ground. The two beams have to be carefully positioned by cranes, and a moment's inattention can result in a severe injury or even death to the workers. High winds and very cold temperatures forced the contractor to hold off installing some of these beams until the conditions were improved. Photo taken in March 2001.
