The Unofficial
I-26 Construction
Madison County
North Carolina

This side cut is between Buckner Gap to the south and the Bear Branch Road interchange to the north. It's mostly soil with some rock outcroppings. During construction, the contractor used explosives to blast through the rock and break it up in manageable pieces. Unfortunately in this case, most of the material was soil and the explosion blew a huge chunk of it out onto the road and over the completed fill slope (seen as a dark streak on the fill). The material is just to the right of the big 200 ton truck in the center of the photo. Taken in March 2001.
