To keep sediment and other material from washing into drainage boxes, erosion control mesh is placed around them once they are completed. A berm is normally built in front of them to contain the sediment and allow workers to clean it out after the rain stops. This one, however, has a gap in it that allowed the water to bypass the basin and run down to the next one, eventually washing over the embankment slope and eroding it severely.
