The Unofficial
I-26 Construction
Madison County
North Carolina

Here's the completed fireplace inside the Welcome Center portion of the rest area building. The stone is native limestone and was assembled using a dry mortar technique, where the joints are left open in front and mortar is used only in the rear half. The shelves to the left and right of the fireplace will display native Appalachian crafts and artwork, and the floor has a native stone pattern stamped into the concrete. The entire rest area will open at the same time the interstate does next spring. Photo taken in November 2002.
