The Unofficial
I-26 Construction
Madison County

Part of the porch and roofline of the rest area building. The devices on the roof are ice breakers to protect the copper gutters from ice sliding down the roofline. Notice the short retaining wall; it uses the same dry mortaring technique used at the scenic overlooks and fireplace in the Welcome Center. The railings are a composite material using recycled plastic and wood to reduce maintenance and wear. The porch offers a great view of Mount Mitchell and the Black Mountains in the distance.
