Looking north at the Laurel Creek Bridge. The bridge was originally designed for two lanes in each direction, but after construction began NCDOT decided to build all six lanes of the road now instead of adding two more lanes later on. The median shoulder was narrowed across the bridge to get the extra two lanes over the bridge, and you can see the asphalt median tapering down on either side of the structure. The wide portion of concrete on the left of the picture is for the off ramp taper for the Bear Branch Road interchange. Photo taken in January 2003.
