The Unofficial
I-26 Construction
Madison County
North Carolina

This photo was taken in June 2001 by the Resident Engineer, Stan Hyatt. Stan climbed up on the big cut just north of the interchange to get this picture. The bridge is a single span with enough width to allow an extra lane on Bear Branch Road if it ever needs one. US 23 is in the background as it runs up toward Murray Mountain to the south. The original location of US 23 can be seen at the base of the fill slope, with the old Laurel Creek crossing for Bear Branch Road visible as well. The sharp curve in the old road was a temporary realignment to provide a safe intersection with the new US 23 location until realigned Bear Branch Road was open to traffic.
