This is a completely untouched photograph taken at Sams' Gap in February 2003 by myself. The Resident Enginer, Stan Hyatt, and myself were up there for a meeting with some Appalachian Trail officials and visibility was less than 300' in mid-afternoon. This photo is from the bridge over US 23 looking south; the light pole is for the truck safety stop and is less than 250' away. A fog detection system to alert motorists to this kind of condition is being considered for both Sams' Gap and Buckner Gap. Detectors will measure the visibility and trigger flashing lights on "Dense Fog" signs north and south of the area when weather conditions get like this.
