Benching excavation along the south face of the proposed rock buttress just north of Waste Area #1. The haul road along the top of the benching carries trucks hauling colluvium out of this large embankment area. When constructed, this rock buttress will be about 1000' long and over one hundred feet high. It is necessary to support the interstate due to the soil conditions underneath the road. Even with almost 50' of colluvium removed, there was still a need to reinforce the fill slope with the rock buttress. Photo taken October 1998.
