Foundation construction on the Laurel Creek Bridge. Two foundations can be seen in this photo. One is up on the slope and the other is right near Laurel Creek Road at the bottom of the photo. Two small retaining walls have already been built above the site halfway up the mountain; these prevent any soil from sliding down onto the pier and putting lateral pressure upon it. The pier near Laurel Creek Road will eventually be over 200' high. The foundation under construction on the mountainside is an internal pier; the end of the bridge is about 50' below the natural ground. Photo taken October 1998.
