The Unofficial
I-26 Construction
Madison County
North Carolina

This is the site of the 500,000 cubic yard landslide that occurred in December 1997. Soil investigations had indicated this area was more unstable than other areas on the project, so the cut slopes were kept to a low 2:1 ratio. It didn't help; heavy rains caused the whole side of the mountain to slide right across the construction area and into Waste Area #2 (behind the photographer). You can see the area is still unstable; a portion of the slope is still moving as shown by the settling in the middle of the picture. To prevent any further movement, the rock buttress below the cut was constructed to hold the unstable material in place. The buttress will eventually be covered in soil and grass seed planted on it. Photo taken October 1998.
